Helping trustees comply with the general code

Schemes and trustees are under increasing scrutiny, and it can be hard to keep up with the pace of regulatory change.

The Pensions Regulator’s new general code enhances existing governance requirements and introduces new duties for trustees, who now need to:

  • Establish and document an effective system of governance (ESOG)
  • Review governance policies – in line with the trustees’ agreed timetable – and monitor ongoing compliance
  • Conduct and document an own-risk assessment (ORA) if the scheme has more than 100 members
  • Establish a risk management function to help monitor and assess their system of governance (if the scheme has more than 100 members).

For most schemes, compliance with the general code will require a significant time investment – both initially, and on an ongoing basis.

How can First Actuarial help?

First Actuarial can help trustees meet their compliance duties in a cost-effective way.

We can take care of regulatory compliance, helping trustees manage their numerous governance challenges and make informed decisions quickly.

We also give clients access to our online Client Hub. This provides all the tools and information trustees need to comply with the general code.

Trustees using the Client Hub can:

  • Store all scheme governance material together in a secure, online portal
  • Carry out a gap analysis to identify additional measures required
  • Keep track of which policies and processes help them meet specific requirements of the code
  • Set due dates for reviewing policies and processes at the required frequency
  • Use a simple risk assessment and recording tool and export the results for their ORA.

Our experienced consultants and scheme secretaries can also prepare a draft ORA, which the trustees’ risk management function can review and approve.

And on an ongoing basis, we’ll keep track of regulatory duties and issues that trustees may miss, especially if their day-to-day work lies outside pensions.

Why trustees need a high quality scheme secretary

At a time of mounting regulatory duties and responsibilities, the appointment of a scheme secretary could not be more important.

Trustees should view the scheme secretary as a key senior role to help them fulfil their legal duties and run an effective trustee board. Having an experienced, technically competent scheme secretary as part of the trustee board’s advisory team will keep the focus on key strategic issues.

A good scheme secretary will:

  • Keep accurate, compliant and up-to-date records
  • Act as a key point of contact for all stakeholders
  • Co-ordinate service provision across multiple advisers on behalf of the trustee board
  • Move processes and actions forward in a timely and organised fashion, using their excellent time and project management skills.

How can First Actuarial help?

Our scheme secretaries make sure everything is in place that trustees need by:

  • Helping to meet the scheme’s key milestones
  • Managing projects, including scheme wind-ups, as required
  • Liaising with third parties such as accountants, scheme auditors and other advisers
  • Providing guidance on regulatory documentation
  • Taking care of meeting preparation, minuting and actions.

We’ll spot issues and regulatory duties that trustees may miss, especially if their day-to-day work lies outside pensions.

In our latest client survey, 97% of scheme secretarial clients who responded were satisfied or very satisfied with our services.

Successful journey

Why choose First Actuarial?

Help with the PPF levy https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/employer-services/help-with-the-ppf-levy/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 09:32:17 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13416

Help with the PPF levy

The security of PPF comes at a price

The Pension Protection Fund (PPF) has proven invaluable in making Defined Benefit scheme members more secure. But this security comes at a price, one that is ultimately born by the sponsoring employer. Because PPF levies can form a substantial part of an employer’s total pension spend, it makes sense to minimise the amount payable, and to get timely alerts of forthcoming increases.

How can First Actuarial help?

We have a specialist PPF team that is highly experienced at reducing the PPF levies of our clients. This may not always be possible, but it’s surprising how often we can save our clients money.

We can help you save money by:

  • Checking that the PPF is applying the right scorecard
  • Making small changes to your company structure
  • Certifying deficit contributions
  • Carrying out bespoke stress tests
  • Introducing a contingent asset or guarantee
  • Simply checking the PPF levy calculation is correct.

To make sure there are no unwelcome surprises we can also:

  • Monitor your Dun & Bradstreet score
  • Estimate your PPF levy as legislation and levy factors change
  • Carry out some sensitivity testing to show the impact of key changes, such as your Dun & Bradstreet score.

Why choose First Actuarial?

When it comes to saving our clients money, we’ve got a great track record.

We work well with the PPF – we know their appeals procedure, and we understand the kind of problems many clients experience with Experian. We can usually identify issues quickly and discuss them informally with Experian or the PPF. Sometimes, we still have to go through formal appeal processes, but we do so knowing what the result will be.

We offer great value for money. We can often work on a fixed fee, having estimated the potential savings. This means that before we start work you know that we’ll save you money.

Corporate change https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/employer-services/corporate-change/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 09:09:03 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13407

Corporate change

Pensions are an important element of mergers and acquisitions

At times of corporate change, such as mergers and acquisitions, pensions are a reality that neither side can ignore. Failure to account for pensions can substantially reduce the financial benefits of corporate transactions, leaving scheme liabilities to eat into any gains. Yet pensions are often one of the least considered areas in corporate transactions.

How can First Actuarial help?

We understand the need for rapid and responsive action together with clear and relevant reporting – and can deliver everything you need at very short notice.

We can carry out a speedy and affordable review to give you a broad understanding of the potential impact of pensions at an early stage. You can then restructure or fine-tune the deal on an informed basis. We have systems and processes in place to get meaningful reports to our clients as quickly as possible.

We can also help you with more in-depth due diligence to uncover any hidden risks and help you negotiate a suitable pensions sale agreement.

Whatever you ask us to do, we’ll carry out our work quickly and accurately. By giving you the information and support you need, when you need it, we’ll free you up to focus on other areas of the deal that are keeping you awake at night.

Why choose First Actuarial?

Our experienced consultants know what to look out for in corporate deals. We can anticipate problems early on in the process to make sure that there are no last minute surprises or hold-ups.

We will work to your timescales to deliver the information you need, when you need it. If it means working weekends or through the night, then we’ll do it, if that’s what it takes to move the deal forward.

We offer reasonable charge-out rates, and our efficient systems and processes generate significant fee savings compared with other consultants.

Risk transfer services https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/employer-services/risk-transfer-employers/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 16:00:23 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13382

Risk transfer services for employers

Securing defined benefits with an insurer can be the best option for employers

The risks of unforeseeable costs, open-ended liabilities and noncompliance can be significant for sponsoring employers of Defined Benefit schemes.

Buy-ins and buy-outs give employers the opportunity to eliminate those risks partially or in full.

With a buy-out, employers transfer their pension accountability and risks to an insurance company. With a buy-in, the employer retains some degree of pension responsibility, but the transaction would ensure that the income from the buy-in asset matches the benefits paid to the members covered by the policy.

How can First Actuarial help?

First Actuarial offers a tailored service to identify the right risk transfer solution for your organisation’s needs. Our specialist risk transfer team advises clients on both buy-outs and buy-ins and we work with all the insurers in the market.

For many employers, the cost of buy-out can seem prohibitive.

We understand what drives insurers’ costs, and we’ll set out the steps you can take to make savings. For example, we can estimate the cost of securing your liabilities against your scheme’s asset value and monitor it over time. This makes it easier to spot attractive and suitable risk transfer opportunities as soon as they arise.

Full buy-out is not always the answer. We use our knowledge of insurers and their costs to identify the approach that will deliver the best value for money.

Where the cost of a buy-out turns out to be prohibitive, we will help you consider the alternatives.

We never forget how worrying a buy-out can be for scheme members, as pension provision moves to an unfamiliar insurer. We can take their anxieties away by providing clear and comprehensive information at every stage.

We recommend this step-by-step approach

Step 1: Agree a suitable timescale

A risk management exercise is often a long-term project requiring responsible proactive management.

If you can’t afford to buy out straight away, a managed delay can get you to full buy-out cost-effectively, allowing good investment returns and additional employer contributions to build up over time.

We’ll take the time to understand your scheme. We’ll talk with you about your budget, your investment risk and your membership profile. And then we’ll set a timescale that works for you.

Step 2: Set the right investment policy

Setting the right investment strategy goes hand in hand with agreeing a suitable timescale. It’s about gauging how much your sponsor is willing to pay to control the risks involved in your scheme.

We will help you set the right strategy for you and your sponsor, and monitor it to make sure it remains appropriate for you.

With the Triggers tile of our Client Hub, you can reduce your investment risks if you find yourself ahead of schedule. This will make it much more likely that you will hit your buy-out target date.

Step 3: Sort out your data

Almost all schemes hold incorrect member data.

Over time, many schemes will have been administered by a series of providers, all with different practices. Legal views have changed too – yesterday’s approaches may not be acceptable today. And administration errors can easily build up.

Your data must be accurate if you plan to undertake a risk transfer exercise, and any Guaranteed Minimum Pensions (GMPs) need to be equalised.

If insurers aren’t confident that the data is in good order, they can charge a significantly higher premium.

Step 4: Set up liability reduction exercises

Liability management exercises can reduce your bulk annuity costs. Making an offer to members prior to buy-out can make sense to all parties. It may be financially advantageous to members in certain circumstances, and will also keep your costs down.

To manage any reputational risk and to treat members fairly, it’s important to explain such offers clearly and discuss the issues openly. That way, members will only accept the options you offer if they are right for them.

Why choose First Actuarial?

We offer in-depth experience and structured processes to simplify the complexities of risk transfer exercises such as buy-ins and buy-outs.

Our service delivers great value for money. We work on a fixed-fee basis whenever possible, and with our pragmatic approach we will offer you the most efficient path through to your risk transfer.

We specialise in transactions below £100m which, without the right approach, can be hard to run at a competitive price. A key element of our approach is our strong relationships with all the major insurance providers. They trust us to deliver on our commitments. This allows us to recommend the best insurers for you. Insurers are limited in the new business they can take on, and their first choice will be to work with consultants they trust.

Excellent administration is the cornerstone of a good buy-out process. This involves making sure the data is demonstrably accurate, and giving the insurer the confidence to offer their best price, knowing problems won’t arise later on.

A risk transfer exercise is a complicated process involving complex decisions. Here at First Actuarial we take the time to support you through the process, helping you make informed decisions at every stage.

We’ll work with you and your organisation in an ethical manner, offering the right options to your staff and explaining their options clearly. This will keep costs and reputational risk to a minimum.

Liability management https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/employer-services/liability-management/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 15:35:07 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13375

Liability management

Defined Benefit scheme liabilities can be worrying for today’s employers

Uncertainties around Defined Benefit pension scheme liabilities can be a source of considerable anxiety for employers. Indeed, many employers prefer to spend any spare money reducing those liabilities, rather than adding extra funding to the scheme.

This makes sense because of the prudent approach trustees are expected to take when funding pension schemes. It means that fair offers can be made to members that give a saving compared to the value placed on the liabilities for funding.

Pensions are complicated and any liability management exercises need to be explained clearly to scheme members. If scheme benefits are reshaped or transferred out, members cannot be expected to make decisions without access to clear and comprehensive information.

How can First Actuarial help?

We can advise on the range of options available to you when managing Defined Benefit scheme liabilities.

We’ll listen to your workforce and take full account of their perspectives, adding and discarding options accordingly, always balancing the needs of your members with your own objectives.

We can help you manage your liabilities for a buy-out with

Enhanced transfer exercises

The amount of money needed to buy out a member with an insurer is higher than the amount held by schemes for their actuarial valuation, for example, and much higher than the transfer value. This can provide considerable scope for boosting transfer values to members, at a level that is still cheaper than buying-out.

Early retirement exercises

Because there is a saving when people swap pension for a cash lump sum, insurers usually assume that members won’t take any cash at retirement. So if your members retire and take cash before buy-out, this reduces the cost.

Pension reshaping

There are numerous ways that pensions can be reshaped to bring down the cost of buying-out pensions. This might involve swapping pension increases for a higher pension, for example, or offering bridging pensions.

We’ll explain the likely impact of any offer and how it might improve your funding liabilities and accounting position, as well as reduce the cost of a potential buy-out.

We can also help you design suitable offers to the membership, and communicate them in ways that will help members understand their options and make informed decisions.

Ultimately, we’ll help you make sure that the right members take up the right options, and that those who shouldn’t take up those options don’t.

Why choose First Actuarial?

We’ll guide you through the complexities of liability management exercises. With our extensive experience, we can identify and explain all the risks involved in each option along with the likely savings. We’ll help you design a programme that works for you and meets your objectives.

Importantly, we are an ethical firm. By the end of a liability management exercise you’ll have achieved your objectives while treating your members fairly.

Scheme investment review

Employers need to get actively involved in Defined Benefit scheme investment decisions

Investment policy is crucial to Defined Benefit schemes in two ways. Firstly, investment policy affects the value placed on the scheme’s liabilities, and secondly, it determines the contributions to fund a scheme. This makes investment policy an area of significant importance to sponsoring employers.

Although trustees of Defined Benefit pension schemes are ultimately responsible for setting investment policy, they do have to consult with the employer before finalising their policy. Unfortunately, this often ends up as a cursory exercise with no real discussion or debate.

It’s vital that employers engage in the detail of investment discussions, making sure the policy aligns with the company’s long-term plans.

How can First Actuarial help?

We offer a comprehensive investment service to help employers shape their trustees’ investment decisions.

A typical project may involve:

  • Helping the employer agree a long-term goal for the scheme
  • Reviewing investment strategy – making sure the current or proposed strategy aligns with long-term plans
  • Suggesting improvements to trustee strategies – either to reduce risk, increase return or make cost savings
  • Attending a meeting to help the employer agree a new investment strategy with the trustees.

Alternatively, we can help employers monitor investment performance, whether trustees use one Fiduciary Manager or several investment managers.

We’ll make sure that trustees give due consideration to your objectives, and that you get a say in investment decision-making.

Why choose First Actuarial?

Our consultants are able to explain the complexities of investments to sponsoring employers, and provide clear, pragmatic advice. We use in-house software to demonstrate the impact of different investment strategies to non-specialists.

We maintain close relationships with fund managers, who keep us informed of new developments, and we share their insights with our clients.

We are used to working closely with both employers and trustees. We bring trustees closer to employers.

Funding negotiations https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/employer-services/help-with-funding-negotiations/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 15:06:40 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13362

Help with funding negotiations

Funding negotiations for Defined Benefit schemes require careful balancing

Trustees review the funding of Defined Benefit pension schemes every three years, with the help of the Scheme Actuary. The size of any deficit and the agreed recovery plan dictate the amount that you, the employer, will need to pay into the scheme over the following three years.

Trustees are required to be cautious in scheme funding, and to make prudent assumptions. But if they’re too prudent, they will ask you to pay more than necessary into the scheme.

How can First Actuarial help?

We provide high quality actuarial services to help employers understand the level of prudence that trustees are applying to the valuation. This puts you in a stronger position to challenge them, if necessary.

Our assessment can result in a lower deficit, or even a surplus, with reduced or no employer contributions. This isn’t always the case, but once we’ve evaluated the assumptions your trustees are proposing, you’ll know whether there’s room for further negotiation.

We understand how important it is to work quickly and accurately, so you get the information you need at the right time.

Once we’ve made sure the assumptions are reasonable, we can provide a range of options to help reduce your contributions, in ways that are acceptable to both you and the trustees.

Why choose First Actuarial?

We offer our clients extensive experience of funding negotiations. We can usually find the right way to explain the employer’s viewpoint to trustees, reaching agreement without causing conflict. But if the trustees and Scheme Actuary are taking an unreasonable approach, we are not afraid to stand up for our clients and tell them.

We have developed innovative software tools to support our work:

  • Valuation Viewer gives a clear picture of the potential impact of each assumption on actuarial calculations. That means we can focus on the assumptions that matter throughout negotiations, and you can make informed decisions.
  • Firstview keeps you up to date with changes to the funding of the scheme, so there are no unwelcome surprises at valuation time.

Our actuaries will challenge conventional approaches where it’s in the client’s best interest. Their in-depth industry knowledge means that they understand the requirements of The Pensions Regulator, so our negotiated solutions will meet your needs while keeping you on the right side of the law.

Defined Benefit pension schemes can be hard for employers to manage

Trustee prudence in Defined Benefit scheme funding can result in excessive caution in both investment policy and funding valuations.

This may lead to calls for the employer to contribute more money to the scheme. These are significant payments in many cases, and can interfere with business plans. Watch our short video to find out how to address this problem.

Employers with a scheme that is closed to new entrants or future benefits are particularly keen to reduce the ongoing business risks and manage the costs of providing those benefits.

Ultimately, the employer is responsible for delivering the defined benefits promised to members. But many employers struggle to exercise control over trustee decision-making.

How First Actuarial can help

Our services give employers peace of mind that they are fulfilling their pension responsibilities.

Overseeing scheme trustees

We work with employers to set up and maintain checks and balances to make sure that trustees:

  • Listen to employers and make allowances for their long-term plans for the scheme
  • Take a prudent approach to funding calculations, without being overly cautious
  • Produce investment strategies that are cost-effective and take account of the employer’s long-term plans
  • Consider all options – not just those that are easier for trustees – fully and openly.

Company accounting

We provide quick and accurate pension figures for company accounts, and keep employers informed so there are no unpleasant surprises at year end.

Managing liabilities

We can help you manage Defined Benefit risks with a sensible, phased approach to reducing liabilities, while protecting your scheme members, and your reputation.

We can also help you reduce your scheme liabilities by supporting your members with the right information and explaining any complex areas. That way, you’re also helping your members can choose the right options to meet their needs.

Help with the PPF levy https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/trustee-services/help-with-the-ppf-levy/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 11:20:25 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13303

Help with the PPF levy

The security of PPF comes at a price

The Pension Protection Fund (PPF) has proven invaluable in making pension scheme members more secure. But this security comes at a price, one that is ultimately borne by the sponsoring employer.

We work well with the PPF – we know their appeals procedure, and we understand the kind of problems many clients experience with Dun & Bradstreet. We can usually identify issues quickly and discuss them informally with Dun & Bradstreet or the PPF. Sometimes, we still have to go through formal appeal processes, but we do so expecting the result to be helpful to our client.

We offer great value for money. We can often work on a fixed fee, having estimated the potential savings. This means that before we start work you know that we’ll save you money.

Risk transfer services https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/trustee-services/risk-transfer-trustees/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 10:57:37 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13290

Risk transfer services for trustees

Securing defined benefits with an insurer can make good sense

For trustees and sponsoring employers of Defined Benefit schemes, the growing burden of regulatory compliance adds additional layers of risk and cost to running a pension scheme.

Many see buy-ins and buy-outs as an attractive solution. With both buy-ins and buy-outs, trustees and sponsors are able to transfer risk from the scheme to a specialist insurer.

Where trustees choose a buy-in, they retain the liability for providing member benefits. With a buy-out, on the other hand, they pass that responsibility across to the insurer, lifting away the combined burdens of risk and scheme governance.

How can First Actuarial help?

First Actuarial offers a tailored service to identify the right risk transfer solution for your scheme. Our specialist risk transfer team advises clients on both buy-outs and buy-ins, and we work with all the insurers in the market.

We use our extensive experience to help you find a solution that will meet all your needs.

We can estimate the cost of securing your liabilities and track that for you over time. And through our Client Hub, you can monitor your scheme’s funding level on a daily basis. This makes it easier to spot attractive and suitable risk transfer opportunities as soon as they arise.

We never forget how worrying a buy-out can be for scheme members, as pension provision moves to an unfamiliar insurer. We can take their anxieties away by providing clear and comprehensive information at every stage.

For many schemes full buy-out is not the answer. We use our knowledge of insurers and their costs to identify the approach that will deliver the best value for money.

Where the immediate cost of a buy-out turns out to be prohibitive, we will draw on our knowledge of insurer costs and work with you to create a structured plan.

We recommend this step-by-step approach:

It’s all about gauging how much your sponsor is willing to pay to control the risks involved in your scheme.

We specialise in transactions below £100m which, without the right approach, can be hard to run at a competitive price. A key element of our approach is our strong relationships with all the major insurance providers. They trust us to deliver on our commitments. This allows us to recommend the best insurers for you. Insurers are limited in the amount of new business they can take on, and their first choice will be to work with consultants they trust.

Excellent administration is the cornerstone of a risk transfer exercise. We work hand in hand with our administration team to make your data demonstrably accurate. This gives the insurer the confidence to offer their best price, knowing problems won’t arise later on.

A risk transfer exercise is a complicated process involving complex decisions. Here at First Actuarial we take the time to support you through the process, helping you make informed decisions at every stage.

We’ll work with you in an ethical manner, offering the right options to your staff and explaining their options clearly. This will keep costs and reputational risk to a minimum.

We offer great value for money. We work on a fixed-fee basis whenever possible, and with our pragmatic approach we will offer you the most efficient path through to your risk transfer.

Communication services https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/trustee-services/communication/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 10:43:29 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13277

Communication services

Pensions come with their own specialist language, complex regulations and documents

Pensions are complicated, and it can be hard for members to understand their benefits and the choices involved.

Trustees have a duty to look after their members and make sure that they’re in a position to make informed decisions.

Pensions are also one of the biggest costs for employers. For employers to get full value from their investment in pensions, it’s essential that everyone understands the benefits.

So explaining pension benefits clearly is in the interests of members, trustees and employers alike.

How can First Actuarial help?

First Actuarial provides clear, understandable information to members, in our day-to-day administration work or as part of an exercise to improve understanding among members.

We run simple communication projects that include:

  • Scheme websites
  • Online benefit calculators or modellers
  • Total reward statements
  • Scheme booklets
  • Newsletters.

We also offer an independent financial education service, working with clients to improve staff wellbeing, with a combination of one-to-one sessions, presentations, webinars and online or mobile tools.

Day-to-day work with members

We give members clear information that they can understand. Our administrators are happy to spend time on the phone with members explaining their options and making sure they understand the information we’ve provided.

We have developed new tools, such as our online firstselect software, which cut through jargon and explain to members exactly what they need to do to start to receive their pension.

Scheme websites

We can give members and trustees access to a simple website where they’ll find all the information they need about their scheme.

Members can access:

  • Booklets
  • Announcements
  • Newsletters
  • Personal data
  • Benefit modellers
  • Quotations issued by the pension department.

Trustees can access:

  • Trust deeds and rules
  • Meeting packs and minutes
  • Key actuarial and legal advice
  • Administration reports
  • Specialist software tools and customised scheme information on our Client Hub.

In short, our websites provide secure access to all the information that members or trustees will need.

Benefit modellers

Modellers can play a powerful role in helping people understand their benefits, helping them understand their options and promoting better decision-making at retirement.

We can produce a bespoke benefit modeller for your scheme. This will give members immediate answers to what-if questions, and help them focus on the decisions that matter.

A benefit modeller will support your members, while improving perceptions of your scheme.

Why choose First Actuarial?

We have developed a strong culture of clear communication, and our staff are skilled at simplifying complex issues with trustees, employers and members. We all go out of our way to make sure members understand our guidance and information.

Our groundbreaking financial wellbeing service has been honed through large-scale projects with FTSE 100 clients. We bring that expertise to large and small clients cost-effectively, and we have transferred those skills across our teams.

Clients and members tell us we explain things well.

Investment consultancy https://firstactuarial.co.uk/db/trustee-services/investment-consultancy/ Wed, 02 Nov 2022 07:59:28 +0000 https://firstactuarial.co.uk/?post_type=db&p=13254

Investment consultancy for Defined Benefit schemes

Trustees need long-term returns on Defined Benefit scheme investments

Assets give Defined Benefit schemes independence from the sponsoring employer, enabling them to pay benefits even if the employer is no longer able to support the scheme. A 30 year old scheme member may still be receiving pension benefits in 60 or even 70 years’ time. Even small schemes hold a lot of money for a long period of time.

This is why trustees need good returns on investments on a long-term basis. And unlike other investors, Defined Benefit schemes have liabilities. So schemes don’t just invest to maximise returns, but also to meet those liabilities.

With these complications, it’s important that trustees get advice that balances returns with the risks that the scheme can afford to run.

How can First Actuarial help with Defined Benefit scheme investments?

We offer a comprehensive investment service to help our clients with their investment decisions.

A typical project may involve:

  • Investment strategy advice – helping trustees make informed investment decisions.
  • Fund manager selection – based on research by our client-facing consultants and up-to-date supplier lists covering a full range of asset classes.
  • Transition services – managing changes to investment strategy.
  • Monitoring and dynamic de-risking – watching investments and liabilities, and choosing the right time to switch investments to reduce risks.

Why choose First Actuarial?

Our consultants are able to explain the complexities of investments and give simple clear pragmatic advice. We use in-house software to demonstrate the differences between investment strategies clearly.

We maintain close relationships with fund managers, who keep us informed of new developments.

We’ve invested heavily in our transition support service. Our robust processes – including out-of-market risk management and transition documentation services – make investment strategy changes as smooth and efficient as possible.

Investment strategy changes are complex, and many trustees miss opportunities by failing to react quickly enough.

First Actuarial puts trustees in a position to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. We work with them to define triggers for action, based on their funding strategy and the specific needs of the scheme.

We offer a range of options to meet different objectives and budgets – from simple market-based yield triggers to bespoke funding level monitoring on a daily basis.

Administration is central to the success of your Defined Benefit scheme

Good administration is crucial for the smooth running of your Defined Benefit scheme.

We tailor our administration service to our clients’ needs – from a simple help desk for your in-house team, to our full service which includes pensioner payroll, accounts production and management of the trustee bank account.

We focus on getting benefit calculations right.  We have rigorous processes to minimise errors, and we check our calculations and we check them again so you can have confidence in our figures.

How can First Actuarial help with Defined Benefit scheme administration?

Supporting your members

We give members clear and comprehensive information that they can understand and rely on. Whether members prefer printed documents, online tools or websites, we’ll give them the right information in a format that suits them.

Trustee accounting

We’ll prepare your trustee report and accounts, and work closely with your appointed auditor to get both signed off in a timely manner. We employ qualified accountants and use specialist software to deliver a smooth-running scheme accounting service.

Managing your trustee bank account

We set up robust systems and controls to manage the trustee bank account safely. We carry out cashflow projections and manage investments and disinvestments so we always have just enough money in the trustee bank account to pay member benefits. This keeps funds invested as long as possible, working hard for the scheme.

Running your pensioner payroll

We can work with your staff on your pensioner payroll, or we can run it for you, making sure pensioners are paid the right amount at the right time.

Why choose First Actuarial?

Our administration services are integrated with our other pension services, making us quick and efficient at everything we do.

We employ skilled staff and our technology is modern and robust, so we’re strangers to the legacy system problems that slow other providers down.

At First Actuarial, the people who answer the phone are the same ones who do the administration work. They’re always at hand to answer your members’ questions. That’s how we build trust with scheme members – this can prove invaluable when they’re faced with important financial decisions.

Both trustees and members notice that we genuinely care about the members and always put them first.

Scheme Actuary services

The Scheme Actuary gives vital support to trustees of Defined Benefit schemes

The Scheme Actuary helps make sure that Defined Benefit schemes are appropriately funded.

Being the trustee of a Defined Benefit scheme means facing complex issues and personal liability. It can be hard to keep on top of the risks and rapid changes involved. And the level of specialist knowledge they’re expected to demonstrate can be overwhelming.

We believe trustees need all the help and protection they can get.

How can First Actuarial help trustees of Defined Benefit schemes?

Our Scheme Actuaries put themselves in the shoes of the trustees they work with. The practical advice they offer strikes a balance between minimising the risks that trustees take and finding pragmatic solutions to the problems they face:

  • We provide high quality Scheme Actuary services to trustees at a reasonable price.
  • We use our experience to offer pragmatic solutions, while minimising trustee risks.
  • Our Scheme Actuaries know how to simplify complex detail to the right level so trustees can make informed decisions.
  • We produce our calculations quickly and accurately, and make sure you get the right information at the right time.

Why choose First Actuarial?

We are highly skilled at explaining our calculations and the options available in the most effective ways.

We have developed innovative software tools to support our Scheme Actuary work:

  • Valuation Viewer helps trustees of Defined Benefit schemes understand the potential impact of each assumption on actuarial calculations. That way they can focus on the assumptions that matter, and make informed decisions.
  • firstview keeps trustees up to date with changes to the funding of their scheme, so there are no unwelcome surprises at valuation time.

Our Scheme Actuaries are not afraid to challenge conventional approaches, where they think it right and judge it to be in the client’s best interest. They take full account of legislation, and their in-depth industry knowledge means that they understand The Pensions Regulator’s requirements.
